Design and materials

The cups are glazed ceramic, so they hold no flavour between teas and show the colour of the liquor properly — which is half of how you judge a steep. The wooden handles keep your fingers off hot ceramic and give the set its warmth against the glaze.

What it suits

At 150 ml these are drinking cups rather than mugs, which is the point. Short steeps poured into small cups are the basis of gongfu brewing: the tea is drunk while it is right, and you get to taste how the flavour shifts across steeps. Two 150 ml cups pair naturally with a 350 ml Crane Song pot — one full pot holds enough to fill both cups.

Care

Rinse with hot water; glazed ceramic does not hold tea stains the way unglazed clay does. Wash the wooden handles by hand and dry them rather than leaving them soaking.
