Oolong Essence is our proprietary Xiao Qing Gan variant — a whole green Xinhui tangerine stuffed with premium Taiwanese-style high-mountain oolong instead of the traditional pu-erh. Brighter, cleaner, more floral. A tea that doesn't exist from any other brand worldwide.

Most Xiao Qing Gan uses pu-erh because that's the 700-year traditional pairing. We built the oolong version because the match works beautifully: the floral character of light oolong amplifies the citrus oils of the tangerine peel, creating something noticeably more lifted than the classic form. It's O2H's own innovation, made specifically for drinkers who find traditional pu-erh too earthy.

Flavour: Bright tangerine, floral orchid-like oolong, clean honey finish
Aroma: Fresh citrus with underlying florals
Caffeine: Medium (light-oxidation oolong base)
Pairs well with: Afternoons, dim sum, light seafood

How to brew: 85–95°C water, 5-second rinse, 15–30s first infusion. Re-steeps 6–8 times; add 10–15 seconds per subsequent infusion.

Oolong Essence is the choice if you love the Xiao Qing Gan concept but find classic pu-erh too heavy. For the traditional version, see Pu-erh Delight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is green tangerine oolong and why is it special?

Oolong Essence features premium Taiwanese High Mountain Oolong combined with the bright, clean citrus of Xinhui green tangerine peel. This pairing creates what tea experts call a "fresh tangerine oolong"—delivering the smooth, complex flavor profile of oolong tea with vibrant citrus aromatics. Taiwanese oolong is renowned for its floral and fruity notes, which beautifully complement the tangerine's natural oils, making this specialty tea a standout choice for discerning palates.

What's the best way to brew this green tangerine oolong?

Brew at 85–95°C (185–203°F) for 3–5 minutes. This oolong tea can be resteeped 6–8 times, with each infusion revealing new flavor dimensions. Start with a shorter steep (2–3 minutes) for resteeps. We recommend using a gaiwan, glass teapot, or traditional yixing pot to observe the beautiful unfurling of the leaves. Pre-rinsing the leaves with hot water for 30 seconds enhances the aroma.

What health benefits does this oolong tea provide?

Oolong tea is celebrated for supporting metabolism and weight management, while the green tangerine peel adds digestive and anti-inflammatory properties. This blend may help improve focus and mental clarity thanks to its mild caffeine content. The combination of oolong's antioxidants with the traditional health benefits of tangerine peel makes this an excellent choice for those seeking a wellness-focused specialty tea.

How much caffeine does Oolong Essence contain?

This green tangerine oolong contains approximately 30–50mg of caffeine per 8oz cup, depending on steeping time. The caffeine content is moderate, making it suitable for morning or afternoon enjoyment without causing jitteriness. If you prefer lower caffeine, shorten the steeping time slightly.

How do I store this oolong tea properly?

Keep your oolong in an airtight, opaque container in a cool, dry location away from sunlight, heat, and strong odors. Store at 15–25°C for best results. Oolong tea is more delicate than pu-erh and should be consumed within 12–18 months of purchase for optimal flavor. Proper storage preserves the subtle floral notes and tangerine aromatics that make this specialty tea exceptional.

At O2H Tea, we take pride in crafting exceptional teas like our Tangerine tea. During the aging process, you may notice a delicate 'hoarfrost' on the surface, also known as 'orange citrus oil.' This natural phenomenon is a result of the citrus oil precipitating after a sun-dried or low-temperature baking process. Rest assured, it's not mildew and poses no harm to your health. In fact, it's a testament to the quality and authenticity of our tea, enhancing its flavor and character.
